The Handover of Hong Kong
July 1st 1997 was an exciting day for Chinese people because English transferred Hong Kong’s sovereignty to China. Chinese people anticipated this event for a long time, so they were very cheerful that Hong Kong became a part of China again. One hundred years ago, China gave the political power of Hong Kong to Government of British Empire. From 1897, Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire, and Hong Kong had to break away from China for 100 years. In these 100 years, Hong Kong accepted a western-style culture and education, so their lifestyle and thought were already westernized. Eventually, Hong Kong regained its mother country--- China’s embrace. Furthermore, the handover of Hong Kong affected the policy, culture and economy of China, and it has made these aspects created a lot of distinct changes.
First, the Chinese Government relaxed the policy for the Chinese and Hong Kong citizens, so they had enough liberty to come and go between the mainland and Hong Kong. Before the handover of Hong Kong, it was difficult for people who possessed Chinese passport had wanted to visit Hong Kong. If people wanted to travel or have the business trip to Hong Kong, they had to hand in the application forms to local police department. After about three months, the police department would give them a reply, but sometimes the application was denied. Therefore, people did not want to open a business or have a trip in Hong Kong, and they thought that was troublesome. When I was eight years old, my parents traveled the Hong Kong with me. When we passed through the customs in Hong Kong, the agents carefully checked our ID and passports, and they took a long time to do that. This situation made me feeling nervous, and it was not very convenient. Now, the policy was changed so that traveling to Hong Kong is easy and convenient. People who want to go to Hong Kong only need wait for one week after they turn in the application forms. Also, passing through customs is easier and simpler than before. Therefore, the visitors and businessmen are happy to travel and open the companies in Hong Kong.
Second, citizens of Hong Kong were affected by the western education and lifestyle, so they already changed their culture which is very different from the Chinese culture. After the sovereignty was given back to china, Hong Kong culture also seeped into the other places in China. The people who were in the mainland China were not aware of western fashion. My cousin who has lived in Hong Kong often visited our hometown. When he came back, he always talked about the fashion. He said the Hong Kong people liked to buy the popular goods from Japan and Korean. However, I never knew what the popular goods were, and I never wanted to buy them. In my hometown, people had their own different fashion, and they did not to for the foreign goods. After handover of Hong Kong, people’s thoughts began to change. For example, I would buy the magazines from Hong Kong or other countries, and I would search about fashion frequently. I knew that the stores in my hometown were going to sell the popular goods in the near future. The Chinese people’s lifestyles also are according to Hong Kong lifestyle’s standard now. They are learning to how they can make their houses become more and more beautiful and comfortable.
Additionally, because of the convenience of policy and culture changes, the economy has also been affected. The handover of Hong Kong created many business opportunities for the people and the enterprises which lived around Hong Kong. Many Hong Kong natives have set up their companies in the other places in China. They need a lot of people to work for their companies, so they create many jobs to us. Also, Hong Kong citizens like to spend much money for shipping or eating in the mainland China. It has had a positive effect. Improving the economy is good for our social status and income. After handover of Hong Kong, my family’s income has become more and more, so our life can be better. Now, my family is able to buy the new and beautiful house, and we are able to enjoy the high life’s level.
Finally, the handover of Hong Kong has profoundly affected the lives of mainland China. Hong Kong is reveal to Chinese Government is the great event, and it has brought numerous surprises to us. It improved the economy, freed the policy, and brought new culture. The handover of Hong Kong will create more opportunities for China, and it will make China become stronger and stronger.
